I have called Canberra home for 35 years and have been involved in animal protection and social justice for 25 years. We Canberrans pride ourselves on being called the “Bush Capital”, but unfortunately, we are losing this title. Currently we try to ‘manage’ wildlife when we perceive it as a pest, a threat or an inconvenience. Instead we should be exploring ways to coexist before it’s too late. We need to look at issues around the lack of grassland connectivity, urban sprawl and things like encouraging drivers to slow down after dark to give our precious wildlife a better chance. As an example - from one side of Canberra to the other is 35 kms. If motorists slowed down by only 20kmph after dark, it would add just over 6 minutes to this journey. Is our wildlife worth more than 6 minutes to you?

Like many of us who live in Gungahlin, I moved here to make a better life for my family. We found a city that looks after people. I'm proud to be part of a diverse city that priorities people and the environment.

As your representative, I will continue to fight for the right of future generations to a liveable environment. As an industrial lawyer, I'm focused on making sure that everyone who lives and works here is treated fairly, so they can build a meaningful life through education, family-friendly government services, and decent, well-paid jobs.

Together, we can keep Canberra a city that works for all of us.

ALISTAIR COE - YERRABI

Canberra's a great place and I'm determined to do all I can to ensure that future generations have the same opportunities that past generations have enjoyed.

I was born and grew up in Canberra and I've been fortunate to enjoy so much this city has to offer, but as a parent I worry every day my kids won't have the same opportunities. Over the past 12 years since I was first elected to the Legislative Assembly, I've heard countless stories from Canberrans who have the same concern.

That's why I am so passionate about making Canberra the best place to live, work and raise a family so everyone can get ahead. We need a fresh vision to take Canberra forward.

That’s why the Canberra Liberals will freeze rates for four years, reduce car rego costs by $100, deliver new $200 Active and Creative Kids Vouchers, and deliver more gap-free GPs to save families $1,000 every year.

We will fix the health system by halving the elective surgery waiting list and emergency waiting times.

We will deliver better education outcomes by focusing on the foundational subjects, removing barriers to teachers being in the classroom and upgrading local schools.

We will fix the transport system by bringing back school buses and employing more drivers.

We will back our local small and family businesses to grow, prosper and employ so we can grow our economy.

We will protect our local environment by planting and caring for One Million Trees, provide guaranteed funding to Landcare and ACT Wildlife and turbocharage our recycling sector.

And by making Canberra more affordable, and making sure more people live in Canberra and pay taxes in Canberra, we can afford to deliver all of our promises.

Unfortunately, on so many fronts, we're slipping behind. We have the longest hospital waiting times, we have the lowest maths and literacy outcomes in our schools, soaring rates and rents and rising levels of homelessness.

The current government has become old and tired, stuck in its ways and unable to fix the problems so many Canberrans struggle with every day.

Canberrans pay world class taxes; they should receive world class services.

We have a positive plan for lower taxes and better services so that everyone can get ahead.

For lower taxes and better services, I ask that you vote 1 Alistair Coe and 2 to 5 Liberal.

JAMES MILLIGAN - YERRABI

I’m so proud to call Canberra my home, to have raised my family here and started a publishing business. I want every Canberran to have these types of opportunities; to buy their first home, to join their local sporting club and to contribute in a productive way to our community,

That is why I am so passionate about making Canberra the best place to live, work and raise a family so everyone can get ahead. We need a fresh vision to take Canberra forward.

Already the Canberra Liberals have outlined a clear plan to address cost of living pressures and make Canberra more affordable. We have committed to freezing rates for four years, reducing car registration costs by $100, delivering a $200 Active and Creative Kids Vouchers, and more gap-free GPs to save families $1,000 every year. We want you to keep more of what you earn and so you can spend that money how you see fit.

We have a range of practical strategies to fix the crisis in our health system and deliver better education outcomes for our children. We will get back to the basics and support our health care workers and teachers to do what they do best. We will fix the transport system by bringing back school buses and employing 100 more drivers.  We will back our local small and family businesses to grow, prosper and employ so we can grow our economy, provide more jobs and opportunity. And we will protect our local environment in real and measurable ways by planting One Million Trees, provide guaranteed funding to Landcare and ACT Wildlife and turbocharge our recycling sector.

Locally in Gungahlin, Kaleen and Giralang we have a strong plan to make the local improvements our community deserves, this includes:

  • Upgrade local shops including new public toilets and improved street lighting
  • Duplicate Gungahlin Drive and Horse Park Drive
  • Upgrade local roads for faster commutes
  • Implement a comprehensive parking plan for the Gungahlin Town Centre and our local shops
  • Upgrades to local playgrounds to improve amenity, seating and accessibility
  • A new multipurpose indoor sports centre for our growing community
  • Upgrades to Amaroo Tennis Courts, Hall Showground, Nicholls Oval and Taylor Oval
  • Construct a Gungahlin Multicultural and Community Centre and Town Hall facility
  • Build a new standalone Fire and Ambulance Station and upgrades to Gungahlin Police Station

We have a positive plan for lower taxes and better services so that everyone can get ahead.

For the investments our community needs, I ask that you vote 1 James Milligan and 2 to 5 Canberra Liberals.

Bernie STRANG (Labour DLP)

Bernie STRANG

BIO – Bernie Strang

Hi, I’m Bernie Strang and I am standing as a candidate for the Democratic Labour Party in the seat of Yerrabi. As an elected representative for Yerrabi I would hope to strengthen the position of low income families with better access to public housing through a Community Cooperative Housing program and to get a better deal for the disabled and elderly throughout our community.

Most of my working life has been spent as a Support worker of one sort or another. I have qualifications in Aged Care and Nursing and have over 25 years’ experience in areas dealing with some of our most vulnerable community members.

For almost 30 years I have worked in the ACT as a Disability Support worker and Nursing Assistant caring for those with physical and mental disabilities as well as with the elderly. I have also worked extensively as a Community Support worker and have had many years’ experience as a volunteer Family Support worker as well as several years as a Lifeline counsellor.

As a married man with 4 lovely daughters and two beautiful grandchildren I have a good idea what’s important in our day to day lives.

Most of my life has been devoted to helping those who have the least in our community. It takes so little to change the lives of those around us. It is for that reason that I am seeking election in October.

There is so much that can and should be done by our elected representatives who too often are focussed on what they see as the ‘big picture’ and forget the smaller, vulnerable members of our community. I hope to change that for the better.

Olivia HELMORE

Olivia Helmore, Yerrabi (Labour DLP)

Hi, I’m Olivia Helmore and I am passionate about improving the policy process for the voices of vulnerable Yerrabi community members, such as single parent and low-income families, people with a disability and cultural minorities. That’s why I’m standing as a candidate for the Democratic Labour Party (Labour DLP).

Having had considerable experience living with a disability, accessing social services and dealing with the cost of living pressures on a low income, I believe I can be a true and worthy representative for the disabled members of our community and low-income families, who struggle to make ends meet every day.

With regards to my background, I have worked as a Disability Support Worker as well as a Swimming Instructor to children and adults in the Canberra community. I am a qualified ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher having been trained through the University of NSW.

Since 2006 I have been a regular volunteer at various communities and events such as the Northaven Retirement Village, “Living Green Festival” as a performer, Belconnen Arts Centre and the Australian War Memorial.

In 2013 I conducted field research with the International Alliance of Research Universities alongside Indigenous community members in the Pilbara, WA. This experience highlighted the importance of developing economy and community together.
In 2014, I achieved a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and History from the Australian National University and in 2016 I graduated with a Master of International Public Diplomacy, from Macquarie University.

Most recently, I have been working as an Office Manager for a Canberra based human rights not-for-profit organisation, which advocates for persecuted minorities here and around the world.

With my experience, skills and attributes, that I have to offer, if elected to become a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Yerrabi, I will seek to forge stronger working relationships with the Gungahlin Community Council and the people of the electorate.

I believe that community well-being suffers when community objectives for development are not heeded by policy makers. So, one of my key priorities would be to ensure that there is a higher level of effective engagement and consultation, involving local needs and vision, in order to help the community to thrive.

Leanne CASTLEY

Leanne Castley – Candidate for Yerrabi

I am an IT Project Manager, a country music singer, and a proud mum. I’ve lived in Canberra since I was 5 years old, and I have such fond memories of growing up here.

I remember spending many cold mornings at Kaleen oval playing hockey, and watching Gungahlin grow from paddocks to the bustling town centre that it is today. As the Gungahlin region continues to grow, it is vital to ensure we have the infrastructure in place to support that growth.

I am committed to making sure we maintain the Bush Capital, keep the cost of living down, and provide the essential services that Canberrans deserve.

The Canberra Liberals will freeze rates for four years, reduce car rego costs by $100, deliver $200 Active and Creative Kids Vouchers, provide access more gap-free GPs, and free access to before and after school care. Our plan to ease the cost of living for Canberrans will save families $1,800 every year.

In addition to putting more money back in Canberrans pockets, we will deliver better education outcomes for our kids, fix the transport system and provide better access to healthcare. We will also plant and care for one million trees, and back our local businesses, so they can grow and prosper.

I am committed to delivering local improvements for the Gungahlin region, Kaleen and Giralang, such as:

  • Upgrading local shops, including new public toilets and improved street lighting;
  • Expanding the Gungahlin Police Station, and building a new standalone Fire and Ambulance Station;
  • Upgrades to local playgrounds to improve amenity, seating and accessibility;
  • A new multipurpose indoor sports centre in Gungahlin for our growing community;
  • Constructing a Gungahlin Multicultural and Community Centre;
  • Implementing a comprehensive parking plan for the Gungahlin Town Centre and our local shops; and
  • Duplicating Horse Park Drive and Gungahlin Drive, and upgrade local roads for faster commutes.

My hope is that Canberra will be as great for my kids to raise their family as it was for me. For lower taxes and better services, I ask that you vote 1 Leanne Castley and 2 to 5 Liberal.

Sustainable Australia Party is an independent community party from the political centre, with a positive plan for an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable Australia. We believe in an evidence-based approach to policy - not a left or right ideology.

Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. That is, operating within our environmental limits.

Unfortunately, due to unsustainable growth in human consumption and population, we are now compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. To address this unsustainable growth, we need to ‘think global, act local’.

It’s time to protect our environment, stop overdevelopment and stop corruption.

If you vote for Sustainable Australia candidates (1 and 2) before other candidates and parties, you will send a clear protest message to all politicians that you want a truly sustainable ACT. A vote for Sustainable Australia will flow through at full value to your next preferences if we are not elected.

I’m Andrew Braddock, a father with a young family, and a carer, and a citizen looking to build a better future for our city. I’m not a career politician looking to advance his career, but someone genuinely concerned about the future of our city.

Our community is growing rapidly, yet investment has not kept pace with the number of people living here.  We also need to get serious about climate change to create a secure and liveable future for all of our children.

That’s why I’m standing to:

  • Reach 30% tree coverage in each and every suburb. Up from Gungahlin’s current 4% - the lowest in in the ACT
  • Kickstart Australia’s electric vehicle and green housing revolution
  • Upgrade and light our footpaths, bus stops, bike paths, playgrounds and parks, so everyone feels safe
  • Expand the light rail line network to reach Tuggeranong, Belconnen and the Canberra Airport
  • Expand the Gungahlin CIT campus to provide more technical and vocational training.
  • Establish a Caring for Country conservation package, to heal our natural environment

I never planned on becoming a politician, but as a Canberra local and urban planner, I'm always thinking about what kind of city we want to create to meet the diverse needs of our community.

It's why in 2016 I decided to take action and run for parliament. I realised that my community needed a strong advocate to deliver real change, and with your support, I've proudly served as your local member for the past four years.

Growing up in Giralang and now living in Franklin means I know our community well. Living here all my life has allowed me to understand the diverse needs of everyone who call this part of Canberra home.

Growing up my family fostered more than 200 children. The experience taught me the importance of governments providing strong essential services and support to the people that need them. It's a lesson I'll never forget.

These values have guided me as I've worked with our local community, and shaped my priorities as a Minister, particularly as we've tackled the many challenges of the last year.

With your vote at this election, we can continue to work together to ensure our community continues to be an inclusive place into
the future.

Bethany WILLIAMS (Canberra Progressives)

Bethany Williams – Canberra Progressive candidate for Yerrabi

Thanks for checking out my candidate statement!

The reasons why I want to stand as a candidate in the upcoming ACT election are numerous, but it mainly comes down to the fact that I am just frustrated and completely fed up with the state of politics in Australia at all levels of government. I have always had more than a passing interest in politics. And I have always been happy to let them do their thing, until a few years ago I started to get more and more frustrated with politicians.

“Don’t get mad. Get elected”.

Federally, our political system is broken and morally bankrupt – but that is a conversation for another day.

Locally, at the ACT level, our government is stale, complacent and arrogant. And election after election, we just choose between the two majors and the Greens, with a few independents and minor parties scattered in that haven’t so far, inspired much support.

But rather than complain about it from the comfort of my couch, I decided to get involved in politics and see if I can get into government to shake things up a bit. I want to give voters a viable alternative that will be trusted to do the right thing if elected.

The things I am passionate about are community, families, health and well-being, and corruption – or getting rid of it. I am not at all saying the ACT Government is corrupt, but from my personal observations, I do not think the government is as open and transparent as it should be. And the unpleasant whiff of dodgy deals with developers, vested interests and back room deals is strong enough for me to suspect that there is more going on than we, the public know about, and I want to find out more.

So, ‘what’s in it for the people of Canberra’ if I am elected?

I will put the needs, rights and the voice of the community over vested interests. I want to make the government not just consult with the community, but actually listen to the community. We do not want the endless construction of mega monstrosities, that are poorly built and with no pleasing aesthetics, lining the skylines of our suburbs. We need better planning, consultation and codesign that makes all new developments work for, and enhance, the community.

If elected, I am making it my mission to provide scrutiny, accountability and transparency to government. This is my personal promise to Canberra.

The specific things I will fight hard for in Yerrabi include:

  • land to build more aged care homes in Gungahlin
  • a hospital in Gungahlin
  • a new police station in Gungahlin that is fit-for-purpose
  • resolution on the Giralang shops
  • more facilities for the youth in our area so they have something to do
  • a tennis facility built in Gungahlin
  • ensuring the ACT Government fulfills its election promise to build a community centre in Gungahlin

(Liberal candidate for Yerrabi)

Dear Friends,

As an Australian with a deep sense of value, I am strongly motivated to represent the electorate of Yerrabi in the ACT Legislative Assembly.

I have been a Canberra resident for over 22 years since I arrived from India in 1998 and living in the Gungahlin suburb of Nicholls for over 14 years with my wife and two children. I am actively involved in several social, cultural and community organisations including the Gungahlin Community Council, Gungahlin United Football Club, Red Cross, St Vincent De Paul Society, Cancer Council and many other community and charity organisations.

I have a Master Degree in Business Administration and significant public policy experience as a Senior Policy Analyst at the Commonwealth Department of Finance for over 13 years, and later as an Associate Director in the private sector. I have runs on the board as a researcher, policy reformer and as a community worker to represent my constituents in the ACT Legislative Assembly.  I look forward to serving the community by listening to your concerns and supporting your needs.

Friends, I stand for better quality of life in Canberra, where we have roads and transport system that better meet our needs, hospitals delivering efficient and timely health care, and public, independent and systemic schools equipped to support the mental, physical and intellectual development of our future generations.  ACT needs a capable Government that can deliver more efficient administration with infrastructure projects delivered on time and on budget, better-managed economy that encourages private enterprise, and lower taxes that come from sound financial management. I stand for more opportunities for our young people, better choices for retirees, and more confidence for families in planning their future.

Friends, if elected, I assure you that I will be a strong advocate for you, the people in the electorate of Yerrabi and will stand firm to resolve your local issues and support your needs. Please feel free to raise any issues that need to be addressed, and/or anything you would like to see happening in your area by emailing me on jacob@canberraliberals.org.au or by calling me on 0431 538 867. I would welcome hearing from you.

Once again, I thank you very much and seek your support to represent you as your local member in the Legislative Assembly. I am here to serve you and I consider that as a great privilege.         Take care and stay safe.

Yours sincerely,

Party: ACT Greens

Electorate: Yerrabi

I’m a father, husband, economist, public servant and a community worker. As president, I negotiated, managed, and delivered the multi-million dollar Gungahlin mosque project.

The lessons that I have learned from life and the Greens’ position are the same. For example, some of my earliest memories include floods drowning whole villages, memories of droughts and deforestation etc. Memories of these ecological disasters remind me regularly that we must work to save this planet.

I have been living in Gungahlin for over 20 years. I love what Gungahlin has to offer, but I believe we can do better. I am for needs based policies and not greed.

In Yerrabi this means we will:

  • plant many more trees
  • build a multipurpose community centre and revitalise Yerrabi Pond. These two initiatives will create jobs, support our local small businesses and will bring families and communities together
  • improve cycle paths and road infrastructures to reduce traffic congestion and better connect our suburbs
  • support sustainable development for Gungahlin
  • enhance efforts to address domestic violence, social isolation and mental health challenges, including in multicultural communities
  • expand Gunghalin CIT campus to increase educational opportunities for people of all ages.

These are need based policies, not greed.

A vote for the Greens is a vote for an alternative voice to represent you, and to build a better normal for all of us.

Deepak-Raj GUPTA

Deepak has lived in Gungahlin for over 20 years and has raised his family in the local area. He sent his kids to local schools, worked in Gungahlin, and he understands what the needs of the community are.

Prior to entering the Assembly, Deepak owned a local business in Gungahlin, worked for the Department of Defence and served as the ACT Chapter President for a Business Council. His broad range of life experience ensure that he is able to connect with a range of constituents.

Deepak’s priorities for Gungahlin are clear: to create and protect local jobs, ensure residents have access to great public transport, healthcare, and education, and to ensure a sustainable environment is left behind for future generations.

As an MLA, Deepak has secured more flexible working from home arrangements, as well as secured expert consultation into water security so that Canberra is prepared for any future natural disasters.

He has advocated for the needs of the community, delivering more community facilities, including a commitment for a large-scale community space at EPIC, a community garden for Throsby, and more parking at the local shops to support small businesses.

Deepak has advocated for better public transport, including delivering more light rail services, as well as for better health services, by supporting the nurse-led Walk-In Centre in Gungahlin, and the commitment to build another one.

Deepak is working to ensure that the Government is preparing for a growing community by building and expanding more schools, planting trees, increasing city services and duplicating our major roads.

One of Deepak’s goals has been to engage with as many people as possible. Since he entered the Assembly in July 2019, Deepak and his team have 30,000 phone calls and house visits to Gungahlin residents.

In response to COVID-19, Deepak and his team made regular community phone calls to offer assistance, information or a listening ear to residents, as Deepak believes a tight knit community does not just happen, but it is something that we must work towards.

Deepak looks forward to continuing his work as an MLA and to continue to protect what matters to his local community.

Mike STELZIG

I was born in Bairnsdale, Victoria, and first moved to the ACT in 2006. I worked for the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Innovation and Science for 11 years - six years as policy officer and five years as internal auditor. I’ve been employed as a policy officer on a contract for the Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate for the past two years. I have two children. I live in Ngunnawal.

The ACT has potential to excel and provide state of the art services, planning and living. Since coming to the ACT, I have seen a steady decline in the quality, affordability and overall planning ability of the Territory government. Hospitals are overfilled, there's a lack of qualified health professionals and specialists and I find it astounding that to get specialist treatment that I have to travel interstate.

There's only one way forward for democracy in the ACT - that's to elect representatives who are not bound by right- or left-wing ideology, unions, industry, religious or any other particular lobby group.

I stand for empathy over fear and ethics over influence. I will make evidence-based decisions and won't be guided by mere opinion. I am committed to bringing ethics back into politics, make decisions based on evidence and give as much power back to Canberrans so that they can determine the future of this Territory.

If you vote the same, you get the same.

I moved to Canberra in 2008 and I quickly fell in love with the city that I’m now proud to call my home.

I am running to support the re-election of the Barr Labor Government in this election to make sure that future generations have the opportunities to enjoy everything that Canberra has to offer: jobs, great schools and health facilities, and green spaces - all in an inclusive and accepting community.

I studied public health, politics and anthropology at the University of Adelaide before moving to Canberra just over twelve years ago for a job opportunity in Public Service. I have also undertaken postgraduate study, obtaining a Masters of Public Policy from the Australian National University in 2015.

I am a public health professional and have worked in this policy area for over twelve years. I know what we need to make sure our community is happy and healthy, particularly during the pandemic recovery. I am a strong supporter of our nurse led Walk-in Centres and am keen to see more investment in appropriate health facilities in the north of Canberra.

My work as a public servant and ministerial advisor has given me the background to see how governments can work to support those who need it the most, and also celebrate the contributions of so many to their communities.

I've loved seeing Canberra grow, and want to be part of ensuring we listen to our community and respond to their needs.

Gungahlin is a rapidly growing area and I want to make sure we support sustainable growth, with community at the centre. That we have the services and infrastructure that we need and want; that we have the roads we need; that development happens appropriately; and that we protect our unique bush setting.

My involvement in community sporting associations as a player, coach and administrator across all competitions (juniors, seniors and masters) has given me an understanding of just how important community involvement is for so many. It has also highlighted how important it is to have leaders who support others to step-up and contribute for their own benefit and for that of their community.

ACT Labor is experienced, progressive and will continue to build up the Canberra we love.

I am proud to be a part of this team that is delivering for Gungahlin.

Party: Animal Justice Party
Electorate: Yerrabi

Description of platform and policies:

I have lived in the ACT for 40 years and in the Gungahlin area for 25 years.

In those days I was proud to say I live in the Bush Capital, but no more. Kangaroos are being culled every year and I would like to see that stopped permanently.

I have been an advocate for animals for the past ten years when I realised animals are powerless and suffer greatly in factory farms, science experiments, live export, entertainment, sport and for human clothing and accessories.

For people, I would like to address the issues of homelessness, low income workers and domestic violence.
I want to be a voice for animals and social justice and through the Animal Justice Party give the residents of Yerrabi a chance to vote for kindness and equality.

Michael PETTERSSON (ACT Labor)

Michael PETTERSSON

I live in Crace and before I was elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly I worked to protect the workplace rights of local construction workers.

I believe that as our city grows and recovers from COVID-19 it’s important that the ACT Government continues to support those that have been affected by this once-in-a-lifetime economic and health crisis.

And the best way the ACT Government can help through this period is by protecting local jobs and supporting the creation of new ones. Even now there are new opportunities emerging in key industries like tertiary education, renewable energy, arts and defence industries that will foster new jobs in Canberra.

We can also support our local economy by continuing to invest in great quality public services. We can provide better education, health and transport services and simultaneously provide stable and ongoing employment in a time of uncertainty that will underpin our economy.

And as we look to build a more resilient city, it’s important that we keep building our city. Which is why an infrastructure plan that supports local jobs and provides confidence in our construction sector will help stabilise our economy.

Which is why Labor is investing in services for Canberra’s north. From new schools in Throsby, Taylor and Harrison, a new nurse led walk in centre in north Gungahlin, a new community facility in the town centre and new tennis courts in Amaroo. These projects will all support local jobs and make our local area an even better place to live.

Given another four years, Labor will invest in more jobs and services for Canberra’s north. I will fight for our fair share of jobs and facilities to make sure Yerrabi remains a great place to live and work for everyone.

I’m asking for your support in the upcoming ACT election because I want to keep fighting to make sure that every Canberran gets a fair go.
