Rattesh GUMBER (Canberra Liberals)

Rattesh GUMBER

Rattesh Gumber – Candidate for Kurrajong

I am Rattesh Gumber and is privileged to represent Canberra Liberals as a candidate for Kurrajong electorate.

I am Director of an IT company by profession and avid social worker by passion. I have been designated as ‘ACT Multicultural Honorary Ambassador’ for four years by the ACT Government.

I am also a practising Justice of the Peace ACT and keep serving my local Canberra community.

A philanthropist by heart, I have executed several social projects helping the needy community in individual capacity as well as in collaboration with organisations like Vinnies, The Smith Family, Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra etc.

I am contesting the ACT Assembly election because I want to make Canberra the best place to live, work and raise a family. For lower taxes and better services, I ask that you vote 1 Rattesh Gumber and 2 to 5 Liberal.

Michael BREWER (The ACT Greens)

Michael BREWER

Party: ACT Greens

Electorate: Kurrajong

I am a student and have been active as a student and queer activist at ANU. I want to be a voice for young people and students in Canberra.

As a young person, my future is jeopardised by inaction on climate change. We are also living in an increasingly unequal society, and I believe we can tackle both issues together, by ensuring climate-sensitive action is at the forefront of our social justice work. I am incredibly excited, for example, to fight for a greener transport system, integrated with footpaths and cycleways, expanded light rail and bus services, and transitioning to electric vehicles. This will ensure more people can get around Canberra whilst protecting our environment.

The Greens are the only party that will always put people and the planet first. We are not bought by corporate donations and want a democracy that works for us all, not just the old parties’ backers. Electing more Greens will ensure we can build a better normal.

Alvin HOPPER (The Community Action Party (ACT))

I am Alvin Hopper and it is a privilege for me to stand in the Kurrajong constituency on behalf of the Community Action Party (CAP). I have lived in Dickson for over 20 years. I have been actively involved in the party during its 12 years of existence and I am its secretary.

CAP stands for greater involvement in political decisions. There have been far too many instances of "backroom decisions" with only token public consultation. An current example is the outgoing government's determination to push through its arbitrary decision on the West Basin project. This has been done in the teeth of strong public opposition. This project threatens to lead to further degradation of the Lake Burley Griffin foreshore.

Decisive action is needed to redress Canberra's growing homelessness crisis - but luxury apartments along the lake is not the way to do it. We must preserve Canberra's environment and our precious open spaces. There is a crying need for wider representation in the Legislative Assembly. As a retired lawyer I am well qualified to scrutinise proposed laws. With no house of review, scrutiny is a particularly important function in the Assembly. I will make a point of being readily accessible to Canberrans and acting where possible to address their concerns. As a long-time resident of our city, I have the ACT's best interests at heart. Our aim must be to improve Canberra for all residents.

Shane RATTENBURY (The ACT Greens)

Shane RATTENBURY

Party: ACT Greens

Electorate: Kurrajong

I’m Shane Rattenbury, your Member for Kurrajong and Minister in the ACT Government.

I grew up here in Canberra and went to uni at the ANU.

For 10 years I worked for Greenpeace, both in Australia and overseas.

I’ve had the privilege of representing Kurrajong for the past 12 years as the Minister for Climate Change and the ACT’s first Minister for Mental Health.

In these unprecedented times, the decisions we make now will shape the future of our society.

If the bushfires and the pandemic have shown us anything, it's that business as usual cannot continue.

While the old parties are seeking a return to normal, the ACT Greens will use this moment to redress the inequalities and injustices of our current systems - to build a better normal.

That means bringing the same boldness, decisiveness, and energy we brought to achieving 100% renewable electricity to reimagining our community in a way that benefits everyone for decades to come.

It’s critical that Canberra’s central suburbs continue to evolve as green, connected and caring communities.

Rapid, poor quality development has seen us lose too many trees and green spaces, while investment in schools and community facilities hasn’t kept pace with our growing community.

That’s why the Greens have a plan to:

  • Build an all-age nature playground and skate park in the inner north
  • Invest in education to ensure our schools can meet the demands of our growing community
  • Respect First Nations heritage by working with local First Nations people to rename key landmarks
  • Upgrade our footpaths, bus stops, bike paths, playgrounds and parks, and light them so everyone can feel safe
  • Fund community and trader-led revitalisations of Kingston and Manuka Town Centres
  • Establish five neighbourhood forests across our central suburbs, in consultation with the community.

I’m keen to continue pulling the government in the right direction on the issues that matter to all of us.

Adriana BOISEN (The ACT Greens)

Adriana BOISEN

Party: ACT Greens

Electorate: Kurrajong

I moved from remote North Queensland to Canberra five years ago to study at ANU and I plan to never leave. I love living in a progressive city with a strong sense of community, that is surrounded by beautiful bush.

I am passionate about addressing the cause of both the inequality and climate crises we face - corporate greed and the politicians that choose to work for them instead of the people. I believe that when people are given real decision-making power, through participatory democracy and budgeting systems, they will make the best decisions for all of their community and the planet. I believe in democratising the economy, through workers participation in the decision-making of the organisation they work for and through the promotion of co-operatives.

I care about issues facing young people. The fact is, my generation is being denied the markers of adulthood, such as home ownership and secure work, but we are vilified as entitled and lazy for wanting the same things that our parents generation had access to, such as free education, decent wages - where full time employment meant you could own a home. This is on top of the fact that many in my generation are in a permanent state of anxiety because those in power refuse to do anything to address the climate crisis. It is honestly really difficult to find hope in all of that, but that is why I am so proud to represent the Greens who are leading this fight!

Robert JOHNSON (Canberra Liberals)

Robert JOHNSON

Candidate Statement – Robert Johnson

I am Robert Johnson, and I have lived in Canberra since the age of 12. I have been an Army Reservist, small business owner, multicultural community leader, Justice of the Peace, and St John Ambulance volunteer. I am a proud Canberran, and love our city, but believe it can be so much better.

One of my proudest accomplishments was serving in the Australian Army Reserves. Over this time, I learned about the value of service and the importance of courage, initiative, respect, and teamwork. These are the qualities we need in our local leaders.

At this election, Canberrans have a very clear choice. We have had a Labor government in power in the ACT for almost 20 years, and over that time we have seen massive increases to taxes, rates, fees, and charges, and a decline in the quality of government services at almost every level.

Instead of displaying a willingness to tackle these problems head-on, the Labor party and the Greens would rather sweep these issues under the rug.

This does not square with my values. If our government does not treat us with respect, it is time for a change of government.

Under a fresh Canberra Liberals government, the ACT can achieve so much more:

We will fix the health system by halving the elective surgery waiting list and emergency waiting times.

We will deliver better education outcomes by focusing on the foundational subjects, removing barriers to teachers being in the classroom and upgrading local schools.

We will fix the transport system by bringing back school buses and employing 100 more drivers.

We will back our local small and family businesses to grow, prosper and employ so we can grow our economy.

We will protect our local environment by planting and caring for One Million Trees, provide guaranteed funding to Landcare and ACT Wildlife and turbo-charging our recycling sector.

In Kurrajong in particular, we will implement a Green Space Guarantee, to ensure that development in our city does not come at the cost of our treasured Bush Capital.

And by making Canberra more affordable, and making sure more people live in Canberra and pay taxes in Canberra, we can afford to deliver all of our promises.

We can achieve all this, and with your support, I will fight for it – vote 1 for Robert Johnson, and then 2-5 for the other Canberra Liberals candidates.

Serrin RUTLEDGE-PRIOR (Animal Justice Party)

Serrin RUTLEDGE-PRIOR

Party: Animal Justice Party
Electorate: Kurrajong

Description of platform and policies:

Do you want to live in a community that recognises the differences that may exist among individuals, but that values these individuals as equals? A community that takes a rational approach to solving the environmental issues that face us, by finding sustainable, long-term solutions based on the best available science?

So do I. This is why I am running for the seat of Kurrajong in the upcoming ACT election.

I came to Canberra five years ago, and quickly found a home in the leafy, community-oriented inner-north. I want to ensure that residents of the suburbs of Kurrajong, whether human or animal, can live, work and play in this vibrant community for a long time to come.

Along with my fellow AJP candidates, I am passionate about the plight of our kangaroo neighbours, who are killed annually in nature reserves, despite the existence of proven, non-lethal methods of population control. As a representative for Kurrajong, I would seek to see these non-lethal methods implemented, and push for the development of more wildlife corridors.

I invite you to join me in working to create a community that is kinder, more compassionate, and more forward-thinking, by voting “1” for the AJP.

Maddy NORTHAM (ACT Labor)

Maddy NORTHAM

I live in the heart of Kurrajong and love the welcoming and diverse community that I am part of. We are passionate and progressive; we care for each other and the place that we live in.

I grew up in Newcastle, the daughter of two school teachers. From them I learned the value of education and the importance of communities that support each other, especially those most vulnerable. I completed my undergraduate education at the University of Newcastle, studying a Bachelor of Social Science.

Early in my working life, I learned the value of collective action. Young women in my workplace, myself included, were being sexually harassed by an older manager. I spoke to all the young women and stood up for the group, stopping the harassment. I haven't stopped standing up since.

At 27 I became the youngest ever Regional Secretary in the history of the CPSU. I have stood side by side with members taking industrial action and have fought time and again to protect our public services from cuts. We all rely on Government to provide strong public services, and cuts put our families under stress. Without people willing to stand up and defend the things that make our community an incredible place to live, they get eroded over time. I’ve seen that working together can achieve change, and I want to work with you to ensure that our public services will always stay in public hands.

As the Regional Secretary of the CPSU and President of UnionsACT I work to ensure that Canberrans have safe and secure jobs. I have:

  • Advised the Government on the delivery of over 500 Jobs for Canberrans, supporting our community through COVID-19.
  • Overseen the conversion of insecure work contracts to permanent jobs in ACT Government.
  • Advocated for the Human Rights (Workers Rights) Amendment Act 2020.

I am passionate about the environment and climate change and I'm an Australian Youth Climate Coalition Champion of Change. I know that green jobs are not just critical to reducing our emissions but they are also crucial in rebuilding our economy.

I am a proud member of Canberra’s LGBTIQ+ community and a fierce advocate for an inclusive city.

I share the values of the communities to which I belong and am now seeking to opportunity to stand up and do my very best to represent the values of our community in the Legislative Assembly.

Robyn WILLIAMS (The Community Action Party (ACT))

I am Robyn Williams and I am pleased to be a candidate in Kurrajong for the Community Action Party (CAP). I am honoured to be CAP’s vice-president. I worked in museums and archaeology in New Zealand and New South Wales, including time in Griffith, NSW, which like Canberra, was planned by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney.

CAP is a truly local party, and it is wholly independent of any other political party. We are always happy to cooperate with other organisations, but we will never sacrifice our party’s autonomy. I am keen on protecting the Griffin-Mahoney vision for Canberra and I am strongly opposed to the West Basin project. This development threatens to be the thin end of the wedge. If it proceeds it will set a precendent for other infill and development along the foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin.

It is important to have community involvement in significant political decisions. Above all, this involvement must be real and effective – not merely nominal, as so often happens. We need to make Canberra a better place for everyone. In general Canberra is prosperous, but anyone can fall on hard times. Many people find life a struggle for one reason or another. CAP doesn’t have a solution to all of society’s problems, but we seek to serve all Canberrans to the best of our ability.

Therese FAULKNER (Canberra Progressives)

Therese FAULKNER

Hi – I’m Therese Faulkner, Canberra Progressives Candidate for Kurrajong. I’m a long-term Canberran, attending primary and high school in Belconnen and raising three daughters in Tuggeranong. I have been living in the Kurrajong electorate since 2007, southside then northside. I have been active in the Canberra sporting and arts communities, playing and coaching soccer and softball (currently playing competitive soccer), and as President of the Canberra International Film Festival 2017-19. I enjoy trivia nights and was a winner on TV quiz shows Pointless and The Chase.

I had a 30-year public service career working mostly in human resource management and international development with AusAID and DFAT, while juggling the various challenges of caring for children, and meeting various family and personal commitments. I was in the Senior Executive Service for about eight years before I left DFAT in 2014. I continue my career and interest in this field as Project Director of international projects with a private sector firm in Canberra, and as Board Chair of the International Development Contractors Community (IDCC).

Inspired to do something practical about the increasing erosion of ethics and values in politics, I joined the Australian Progressives in 2018, and ran as a candidate for the seat of Bean in the 2019 federal election. I have been a key member of the team which established the Canberra Progressives, and am delighted that we are running with a team of seven excellent candidates across the electorates of Kurrajong, Murrumbidgee and Yerrabi in the 2020 ACT Election.

Our ‘Demand Better’ slogan is about having the community demand better principles and actions from their elected representatives. The Canberra Progressives policy platform is grounded in principles of Ethics (as opposed to vested interests), Evidence (as opposed to ideology) and Empowerment (ie. empowering the community through genuine community engagement and ‘ownership’ of what happens in the ACT). The Progressives also propose taking long-term approaches to planning and implementation – not just quick fixes to fit with election cycles. Some things take 10 or more years to develop and take effect; this is something I’ve learned from working with overseas projects.

Our policies cover a broad range of areas including urban planning and development, transport, education, health, business, community engagement, political integrity, affordable housing, and more. We see the Canberra Progressives bringing a fresh new voice into the Legislative Assembly – one which represents the people in Canberra who don’t feel comfortable with the policy products offered by, and the party machinery behind Labor, Liberal and Greens.

I am confident that my professional and life experience can positively influence the ACT Legislative Assembly and bring about some genuine and positive change for the people of the ACT.

Julie SMITH (Animal Justice Party)

Julie SMITH

Name: Julie Smith

Party: Animal Justice Party

Electorate: Kurrajong

Description of platform and policies:

Many Canberrans have taken comfort from the love and loyalty of their companion animals during COVID 19.

At the same time, we allow animals to suffer callous and brutal treatment. Cruel puppy farms and live animal exports are but two examples. Equally heartbreaking was the obliteration of three billion Australian native animals during the bushfires.

The standards we set for animal welfare reflect the standards of the society we live in. I have spoken out against immoral standards. I have exposed the corrupting potential of gambling, which exploit greyhound and horses. I have also worked to maintain the values of our Bush Capital, having successfully led the community campaign to save the Watson Woodlands.

I volunteer for a local animal rescue organisation and am inspired by the compassion, commitment and courage of animal activists to ensure that the voiceless are represented. Australian political parties have failed dismally to respond to public disgust at the live export trade, or the ongoing extinction of unique native animals.

Like many Canberrans I am sick of ill conceived ‘urban infill’ policies which push up rates and house prices, and short-change Canberra communities on infrastructure such as local parks, cycleways and schools. I was influential in getting the (Stein) judicial inquiry into questionable ACT land deals, and have advocated for better urban planning policies.

Locally I have fought against tree clearing and housing developments that destroyed valuable wildlife habitats. Wildlife corridors for Canberra’s endangered native woodland ecologies are vital for animals like the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater which returned to its old feeding grounds in Watson in January 2020.

Water for wildlife, better on-farm practices, and effective measures to reduce road kill are also essential to preserving our native animal populations. Animal rescue and wildlife carers need better support.

I am a former public servant, consultant (including to the WHO), and an academic researcher. My research has informed taxation, gambling and public health policies.

I have volunteered for many years as an economic and tax policy advisor to the Australian Council of Social Services.

I have been a Nursing Mothers/Australian Breastfeeding Association volunteer for thirty years, and remain active in public health advocacy for women and babies.

Voting 1 for the AJP puts caring for animals on the policy agenda and provides a moral compass for our future across a wide range of policies.

Joy ANGEL (Sustainable Australia - Stop overdevelopment. Stop corruption.)

Joy ANGEL

Sustainable Australia Party is an independent community party from the political centre, with a positive plan for an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable Australia. We believe in an evidence-based approach to policy - not a left or right ideology.

Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. That is, operating within our environmental limits.

Unfortunately, due to unsustainable growth in human consumption and population, we are now compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. To address this unsustainable growth, we need to ‘think global, act local’.

It’s time to protect our environment, stop overdevelopment and stop corruption.

If you vote for Sustainable Australia candidates (1 and 2) before other candidates and parties, you will send a clear protest message to all politicians that you want a truly sustainable ACT. A vote for Sustainable Australia will flow through at full value to your next preferences if we are not elected.

Elizabeth LEE

ELIZABETH LEE - KURRAJONG

I’m Elizabeth Lee and I am your Liberal Member for Kurrajong.

I was elected in 2016 and am Assistant Speaker, Shadow Minister for Education, Shadow Minister for the Environment and Shadow Minister for Disability. I am also the Chair of the Assembly’s parliamentary oversight committee of the ACT’s Integrity Commission and am a member of the Assembly’s Education, Employment and Youth Affairs Committee.

I am committed to working hard to ease cost of living pressures and to create a sustainable future for all Canberrans. For too long we have seen this Labor and Greens government take Canberrans for granted. Canberrans deserve a government that respects and listens to them.

I was born in South Korea and moved to Australia when I was seven years old. After growing up in Western Sydney, I moved to Canberra to pursue a law degree at the ANU.

Prior to my election, I was a lawyer (in private and government practice) and a law lecturer at the ANU and University of Canberra law schools.

During my years in practice and academia, I was elected to and held the roles of Chair of the ACT and the Australian Young Lawyers Committees; and Councillor and Vice President of the ACT Law Society. It was a great privilege to represent and advocate for my profession.

I was also a registered fitness professional and have taught group fitness classes all over Canberra.

My partner, Nathan, and I have a beautiful one-year old daughter, Mia, who was born whilst I was in office and we live in the beautiful Inner South.

The Canberra Liberals have a positive plan for lower taxes and better services so that everyone can get ahead.

For lower taxes and better services, I ask that you vote 1 Elizabeth Lee and 2 to 5 Liberal.

Bruce PAINE (Independent)

Bruce PAINE

Candidate Statement by Bruce Paine - Independent candidate for Kurrajong

Key reasons to vote #1 Bruce Paine

(and to vote for sensible Independents and minor Party candidates in all ACT electorates).

I have the skills and experience to stop [REDACTED], including by hugely increasing rates, then wasting money, and being unduly influenced by the construction sector.

Voting for the Greens is essentially voting for Labor because the Greens have not prevented Labor’s excesses.
Currently the ACT is the only State or Territory where Labor, the Greens and the Liberals hold all of the seats in their equivalent of the ACT’s Assembly!

And the Federal House of Representatives includes 3 Independent MPs.

If I am elected as an Independent in Kurrajong that will stop Labor/Greens taking the people in Kurrajong for granted, ensure meaningful consultation occurs, there is transparency, and the government is held accountable in the Assembly.

The current Labor/Green controlling majority is too cosy and comfortable.

Independent member(s) in the Assembly will keep Labor/Greens focused on the whole community during the four years between ACT elections.
Otherwise, they will go back into a slumber until 6 months before the next ACT election in another four years.

Vote #1 Bruce Paine Independent, please.
See my social media on:
Twitter search for:    @PaineIndepend
Facebook search for: BrucePaineIndependent

Who is Bruce Paine?

I have lived in Kurrajong for nearly 50 years, and worked in the Federal Treasury for 30 years.
I volunteered on the Board of Pedal Power ACT - which has around 7000 members.

My vision for Canberra includes that:
Rates become affordable again, and that we receive good services. Town planning includes meaningful consultation and binding criteria in key areas, while still allowing good development. And that building standards are enforced.
Whoever forms government is honest, open and accountable. Canberra continues to be socially progressive.

I will deliver on my vision by:
In the ACT Budget, I will push for a freeze on all rates and ACT taxes for 1 year and to use that period to review the ACT’s rates, taxes and spending.

I think most voters would be very surprised if they knew the ACT government already spends the equivalent of about $15k for every person who lives in CBR.

Just to be clear, that excludes Federal Govt spending in Canberra.  Despite that $15k, Labor/Greens have said they will increase our residential rates by 3.5% every year.

That is much faster than most voters’ income is expected to increase. In marked contrast to Labor/Greens, I think it is important that rates and taxes are affordable, and that whoever forms the next government spends our $ much more carefully.

On planning, I will insist on consultation with the community, the publication of master plans and strict limits on development.
On good government, I will insist that whoever forms government, consults meaningfully on all major issues, and is transparent. ENDS

Andrew BARR

As a social progressive and economic reformer, Andrew has led an inclusive and positive agenda for Canberra since being elected ACT Chief Minister in December 2014.

From nation-leading tax reform to city-shaping infrastructure and progressive whole-of-government economic policies, Canberra is thriving.

During Andrew’s time as ACT Chief Minister, Canberra has been ranked by the OECD as the best city in the world to live and by Lonely Planet as one of the world's best cities to visit.

Andrew has lived in Canberra for more than 40 years and attended Holt Preschool, Turner Primary, Lyneham High and Lake Ginninderra College, before studying a Bachelor of Arts at the Australian National University, majoring in economics, economic history and political science.

The ACT Labor Government has been focused on creating a positive, progressive city that provides world-class healthcare, excellent schools and tertiary education, and infrastructure and services that meets the community’s needs and expectations.

Andrew is passionate about supporting Canberra’s diverse community. Through a range of innovative policies, he has helped shape Canberra to become Australia’s most inclusive city and the most LGBTIQ-friendly city in the country.

Andrew’s priority is keeping Canberrans safe through the COVID-19 pandemic and leading Canberra’s economic recovery. In these uncertain times, Andrew’s ACT Labor team has the right plan to support Canberra and protect local jobs.

Labor’s Plan is to grow Canberra’s employment base from 230,000 to more than 250,000 local jobs by 2025 as part of our recovery from COVID-19. Labor’s jobs and economic recovery Plan includes the delivery of our $4 billion Infrastructure program.

Only Labor will extend light rail to Woden, and we will keep supporting local jobs by expanding the Canberra Hospital, building a new northside elective surgery centre, five new walk-in health centres, new schools and a new CIT Campus in Woden.

Andrew has led Canberra’s strong economic performance delivering nation leading employment growth, low unemployment and increasing the size of the ACT economy to over $41 billion.

At this election, only Andrew’s ACT Labor team can continue delivering for Canberra.

Sophia FORNER (Australian Climate Change Justice Party)

Sophia FORNER

I am a Canberran for over 15 years and reside in Campbell with my husband and 12 year old daughter. Over the last 15 years our family has established itself and I am active in the community working at café’s, gyms, volunteering at our school and as a personal trainer. I am a family centred person and know the challenges of day to day family living in Canberra.

During the 15 years of I have noticed several matters of poor Government policy outcomes from the ACT Labor and ACT Greens Parties which I believe could have been done better with more care and responsibility. I have also noticed that in making ACT Laws implemented supposably for the benefit of the community at large, seem to ignore the right and entitlements of the minorities resulting in prejudice. I believe in whole of community social justice and social equity with all people benefiting and contributing to changes in the ACT.

I am standing on this election to advocate for the fair go of minorities because I feel many minor voices which do not impact by themselves the outcome of election are ignored by the Government. I feel that Government does not represent the interests of all Canberran’s only focussed on groups that can get them re-elected. That is why I have joined the ACCJ with a strong social justice and whole of community approach to politics.

The ACT Government appears to ignore minorities in various business sectors and I raise this issue from personal experience relating to the taxi industry reforms.

Canberra is a growing city and we need more people to come and live in affordable personally owned properties. One of the things the Government should do is to release land not to developers but directly to the people. I object to the Government’s steep increase of rates and taxes the Government can undertake costly infrastructure projects such as the Monorail in places where it is not needed at this stage.

The Government should promote in conjunction with Centrelink community work for people on welfare. I have noticed in certain Shopping Centres and car parks people sleeping and begging for money. This has to be stopped now as people are fed up with it. I think they should be put to work on farms harvesting fruit and vegetables or sending them to nursing homes to help the elderly with what ever needs to be done.

I think Canberra is a beautiful city to live in if we have more recreational activities for our kids such as theme parks, to extend ice skating in the city for the whole of winter and Drive inns in the summer it would be better. I want Canberra to become again a city which thrives and gives real value to families.

Tim BOHM (Canberra Progressives)

Tim BOHM

Hi, Tim Bohm here Canberra Progressives candidate.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about myself and other candidates running in this election.

I love Canberra and have spent the majority of my life here. I was born here, our three kids go to school here, my parents live here, and my wife and I own a commercial property and run a 15yr strong successful business here. But really it's not about me, it's about what I can do for you, the community and the electorate.

Why am I running? I want the best for our suburbs, our kids, our local businesses and communities. I want Canberrans to have a world-class health and education system, and to ensure that future generations have a bright, clean, and healthy environment.

I love Canberra. I believe it could be and should be the best city in the world, but for too long, we have blindly trusted the major political parties to do the right thing, and they haven't.

I want Canberra to be a city that values, embraces and promotes ideas, creativity and education. A city not scared to push the boundaries to nurture communities that are responsible, resourceful and resilient.

During this election campaign, I've had two issues repeatedly expressed to me by voters: They have been 'ignored and taken for granted' and they have lost trust in our government. This is very disappointing.

I believe that all members of any elected government should act ethically, be accountable and be responsible. I am committed to tackling corruption in all forms and to promoting principles of integrity and accountability.

Why vote for me? I have a history of getting things done. I was a founding board member of the Design Canberra Festival. I helped set up the Canberra Rotary BuyCycle charity event. I was a founding board member of the Fyshwick Business Association. I have been a sponsor and supporter of the ACT Safe Shelter service for homeless men from its inception.

I'm proud to be an active member of my local community, the arts community and the business community. For 15 years I have been the creative director and co-owner of 2B Advertising & Design. I am the past president and founder of Bullet Train for Australia, a federally registered political party. I am an active member of my local Rotary Club and school P&C. Long term supporter and volunteer board member of several arts associations. In 2019, I was the Majura Primary P&C Delegate at the Parents and Citizens Council. Finally, I coach of the amazing Majura Thunder (Under-10 girls soccer team).

With your help, the Progressives can make the first steps in breaking the unfair hold that the major parties have on the local and federal political system. I want to provide a fresh, progressive alternative for Canberra voters.

If you want to make a difference, Demand Better by voting Canberra Progressives. We will actually hold the government to account for you and our community, not vested interests.

John HAYDON (Sustainable Australia - Stop overdevelopment. Stop corruption.)

John HAYDON

You can find further candidate details under ‘Elections’ on our website:

Peta Anne BRYANT (Canberra Progressives)

Peta SWARBRICK

My name is Peta Swarbrick. My married name is Peta Anne Bryant.

I have been a Canberra resident for 20 years. I moved to the Bush Capital to raise my family with my Canberra born husband, and lived in my street for the last 20 years. I chose to send my kids to local schools, run my home business here because I love my diverse, inclusive, local community. I am so lucky to live in this vibrant leafy suburb, and proud to be a citizen of this rich and clever city, proud to stand as a Canberra Progressive. I am standing because our leaders have held power too long, lost touch, and no longer care about what our community needs. I am standing for respect, for dignity, and for fairness.

I am not a trained politician, or a cog in a party machine, or a rusted on party member. I am a mother, a community organiser, a business owner, a volunteer, a student, a traveller, and a lifelong learner. I have more in common with you, in my values and experiences, than any career politician. If elected, I will use my life experience, my respect for the opinion of others, and the lessons learned in our Legislative Assembly. If elected, I will ensure fairer decisions for everyone and I will be a local voice fighting for my local community. If elected, I will be your scrutineer, I will hold the government to account on your behalf.

Locally, I have heard many concerns about the lack of investment in community development, green spaces, our school communities, basic services like bus routes and the maintenance of some of our oldest suburbs. I agree that we need better community consultation, and less profit driven development. We need to be able to trust our leaders to make decisions in the best interests of the many, not just the few. I want to see more of our local needs given the respect they deserve.

I have listened to people across our electorate. I share concerns about poor planning, unchecked private development, cost of housing, lack of services, protection of heritage and environment, and how our community feels ignored. Personally, the rate of homelessness, particularly amongst older women, the rates of violence against women, the worsening impacts of COVID on women, and the lack adequate responses to these issues makes me feel more determined to be the change we need.

It is time to establish a cross bench to hold major parties to account in the ACT. We are the only state or territory in Australia that does not have a single independent voice in the place where our future, and the future of our children is decided. It is time to change that. When everyone is cared for, our community is safer, healthier, more sustainable and more productive.

I ask for your vote so we can fight for a fairer, safer, more secure future. Vote 1 Peta Anne Bryant for Canberra Progressives.

Marilena DAMIANO (Independent)

Marilena DAMIANO

R E S P E C T : Ngunnawal people

Hi, I’m Marilena Damiano, a disabled, middle-aged woman, and recent cancer survivor. I’m born, bred, educated and operate a successful sustainable business in the electorate of Kurrajong. My well-established philanthropic Italian family settled in Kurrajong in the 1950s.

I obtained my university education and training via highly competitive scholarship programs here and abroad. I’m well-travelled as a photo-journalist, new media consultant & international corporate executive. I’ve lived in many countries and fluent in several languages. More recently, I’ve undertaken a PhD and completed a Hollywood feature-length screenplay on child abuse.

Over the past two years, ‘Marilyn on Kennedy’ vintage designer boutique has assisted women of domestic, family and sexual violence. MonK has injected $60,000 to local charities and supported myself and other women who are victims of crime - domestic, family and sexual violence. It’s providing ongoing education to locals about women’s issues including women’s cancer and counselling services. On numerous occasions I was assaulted at my shop and property was destroyed, with no support and nine-month wait for counselling. I am a passionate social justice advocate because of my experiences and a lobbyist for increased government support for all women’s issues and effective management of those resources.

I’ve heard your cries of disillusionment as our government breached human rights. With unfathomable high rates and ineffective; health; housing; policing; and, justice systems, important small business (backbone of our nation) cannot thrive. No point in standing back and complaining because we are at breaking point.

R E F O R M :

Homelessness & Poverty - A disgrace, no one need endure, especially when developers rule and commercial realtors are under regulated. Unlawful homeless due to serious breaches by government is unacceptable!

Canberra Hospital - Failures to supply a cancer doctors, nurses and ultrasounds for cancer sufferers. Failures to inform of poorly managed IPTAS scheme and 12mth waiting list for the Pain Clinic is utterly absurd!

Integrity Commission & Justice - Funds injection into this new entity (include oversight of ACT Policing) and public inquiry into the justice and community system, ensuring a safe and fair Canberra for all!

Business & Regulatory Services - No viable action plan doesn’t invigorate new business, together with commercial building vacancies and unsustainable rate costs at an all-time high… is pending disaster!

Banks - Ongoing public inquiry due business banking failures, withholding funds to local businesses and failing to deliver on promises to support women of domestic/family violence. Disgraceful!

I’ll fight for your local concerns with community considerations paramount each day and every day! That’s a powerful proposition because clearly local government is not delivering. Paying the highest rates in the country and not receiving services we pay for is plain unjust. The electorate of Kurrajong needs a strong, independent and vocally active member of the community to represent our needs.

Please interact and voice your concerns at ‘Marilyn on Kennedy’, 39 Kennedy St, Kingston on Saturdays 11-5pm or DM via instagram: marilynonkennedy

Jacob INGRAM (ACT Labor)

Jacob INGRAM

I've got positive plans for a fairer city that takes action on climate change and offers the best quality of life in the world.

As Canberra grows, our community needs fresh faces who will work hard and get the priorities right. In the Assembly, I'll:
- Take action on climate change.
- Refresh public spaces like Lonsdale Street and the Dickson and Narrabundah Shops.
- Stand up for those in need and provide better public services.
- Deliver more green spaces and trees.
- Improve building quality and remove stamp duty to encourage home ownership.

My focus on practical issues will add value to a Labor Government that is already delivering local jobs, light rail and new health walk-in centres across the city. My background is in urban renewal policy and I've worked with the public service at both a Territory and Federal level.

I've lived in Kurrajong with my partner Madison for almost a decade. We value everything this city offers, and as a fresh face I’ve got the energy and drive to deliver for our community.

If you share my priorities for Canberra I hope you'll consider voting for Jacob Ingram and Labor this Election.

Patrick PENTONY (Canberra Liberals)

Patrick PENTONY

PATRICK PENTONY – Kurrajong

I am a third generation Canberran now raising my own family in the beautiful Inner South. I know Canberra is a great place to live, but it could certainly be better.

I am running for the electorate of Kurrajong because I have grown frustrated in seeing our taxes and cost of living increase, while the quality of our local services has declined.

The Inner South has some of the highest rates in the ACT, and if Labor and the Greens have their way, they will continue to grow. But what do we get for our rates? Our footpaths aren’t maintained. Our streets have pot holes. Our streetlights are failing. Our local shops are desperate for attention. We pay world-class taxes, we should have world-class services.

I know how hard it can be for small and family businesses in Canberra. My experiences in establishing and running businesses, such as The Southside Farmers Markets and Choku Bai Jo, taught me how vital it is to have a local government that supports you.

I, along with many other business owners, feel as though the current government has not supported local Canberra businesses. There have been endless additions to red tape, along with increased fees and charges. I will be a strong voice for the business community and will work to make Canberra the best place to own and run a business.

Additionally, I am an active member of my local public-school P&C, and I volunteer with Safe Shelter ACT and the Cancer Council ACT. I feel it is important to give back where you have the time and means to be able to.

I am running for the Canberra Liberals because I want Canberra to be the best place to live, work, and raise a family. I believe there is a better way and Canberra deserves change.

For lower taxes and better services, I ask you vote 1 Patrick Pentony and 2 to 5 Liberal.

Candice Burch - Kurrajong

I have lived, worked, and studied in the Inner North and Inner South for 14 years. Over that time, I have become frustrated to see our rates constantly increasing, whilst local services get worse and worse.

As a proud Canberran, I want our city to be the best place to live, work, raise a family, and grow old. I want our city to have world class healthcare, and an education system the envy of Australia. A city that is safe and vibrant, but most of all, affordable, and a place where families and small businesses can get ahead.

The Canberra Liberals will freeze rates for four years, reduce car rego costs by $100, deliver new $200 Active and Creative Kids Vouchers, and deliver more gap-free GPs to save families $1,000 every year.

We will fix our planning system, to ensure new developments are appropriate for our suburbs, and that consultation is truly community-centric.

We will fix the health system by halving the elective surgery waiting list and emergency waiting times.

We will deliver better education outcomes by focusing on the foundational subjects, removing barriers to teachers being in the classroom and upgrading local schools.

We will fix the transport system by bringing back school buses and express commuter services.

We will back our local small and family businesses to grow, prosper and employ so we can grow our economy.

We will protect our local environment by planting and caring for One Million Trees, and ensure our suburbs remain green with our Green Space Guarantee.

Unfortunately, our city is not being well-maintained, and too many Canberrans are struggling to make ends meet. Under Barr, we have the longest hospital waiting times, we have the lowest maths and literacy outcomes in our schools, soaring rates and rents and rising levels of homelessness. This is not good enough and Canberrans deserve better.

Canberrans pay world class taxes; they should receive world class services. We have a positive plan for lower taxes and better services so that everyone can get ahead.

For lower taxes and better services, vote 1 Candice Burch and 2 to 5 Liberal.

Petar JOHNSON (Australian Climate Change Justice Party)

Petar JOHNSON

Canberra and the nation faces are challenge of immense proportion to evolve as a civilization ready to face the climate change, social inequity and economic recession challenges of this century. Our younger generations are not going to be the beneficiaries of a better world, but inherit a poorer natural resource base, a highly indebted government and a more competitive and challenging society. The mantra of the major parties no longer has any relevance to the current situation in Canberra. We see to share with Canberra a different version of sustainable development with the detail, concrete costings and social leadership mechanisms that can take our city to a new sustainable golden era.  As a city we need to start this journey now in earnest so that the community becomes the beneficiary of this evolution in an equitable way to everyone’s benefit. If we do not commence these reforms and redirection of our city’s growth the challenges will follow one after another and our Governments, communities and businesses will not be able to respond while maintaining the quality of life we enjoy at the moment. Everyone in Canberra can feel that the quality of life in the city is getting poorer, more competitive and less satisfying. Our current leaders don’t know what to do about it and ignore the issues always pointing to new promises. We know it’s not and our community feels it every day.  We hope to share and ask for your support this Election in directing Canberra to a community led sustainable future.

I am a sustainable development practitioner since 1988 as a post-graduate Human Ecologist from the Frank Fenner School, ANU. My career has been wide flung but always centred on sustainable development, industrial ecology and environmental conservation.  Just some of my achievements are the Founder and Chairman of Good Environmental Choice Australia Ltd (Australia’s national ecolabelling program), LCA based auditor for some 300 companies around the world, UN Environmental Program Sustainable Consumption regional expert and Director of ISARating – an international bond/institutional debt rating company not dissimilar to Standard and Poor’s and Moodie Ratings but based on the ecological and climate change impacts of funded projects.  I have also worked for NGO environmental organisations, some 11 Commonwealth and ACT Government departments and travelled widely around the world for sustainability work and personal interest. I have been a resident of Canberra since 1976 and have a history with the Canberran way of life.

We contest this election with our Climate Change Justice team with a firm resolution that Canberra needs to pursue a different version of sustainability than the one being advocated by the current Government. Their ways will not work for many obvious reasons and will in face destroy the opportunities for an evolution of Canberra to a sustainable city.

I am the Founder and Convenor of the Australian Climate Change Justice Party.  I invite you to take a close look at our approach to evolving Canberra at this important time.

Rebecca VASSAROTTI (The ACT Greens)

Rebecca VASSAROTTI

Party: ACT Greens

Electorate: Kurrajong

I’m Rebecca Vassarotti, a born and bred Canberran, and my family has called the electorate of Kurrajong home for 2 decades. It’s a special place to live and I am grateful every day for the rich environment that this place provides me - its natural beauty, it's great people and it’s strong supports.

I am running in this election because I’m committed to see Canberra as a place where we take care of each other and our local environment, where we continue to lead on climate action and where we make sure our city remains a great place to live for everyone. I believe with the right investments, we can protect the things we love about Canberra and address the concerns that many of us have about how we evolve in a way that is sustainable, equitable and meets our evolving community.

I am passionate about ensuring everyone has a decent home, investing in strong social supports so that people can meet their potential, working the community to protect our beautiful natural environment, and reshaping how we engage with community so we can involve them in decision making on issues that impact their daily lives.

I’m keen to pull the government in the right direction on the issues that matter to all of us.

I grew up in Canberra, walking and riding my bike to some fantastic local public schools - O'Connor Coop, Turner Primary, Lyneham High and Dickson College. Before entering the Assembly, I'd worked as a policy advisor and senior executive in the Federal and ACT Governments and with non-government organisations. I've also been a waitress and a diplomat; a horse riding coach and a Commonwealth Cabinet Minister's Chief of Staff.

ACT Government services make a real difference in people's lives whether it's in the day-to-day things like maintaining parks and footpaths, big projects like building light rail, critical services like schools and hospitals, or the complex work of supporting children and families who are doing it tough.

After more than 20 years in public policy, I know that good government is driven by clear values, sound evidence and strong community engagement.

I’ve been proud to serve our community as a Minister in the ACT Government for the last four years. As the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs and Children Youth and Families for the entire term, I’ve been particularly focused on improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable groups in our population. But there is always more to do.

As Minister for Health, it has been a privilege to see the professionalism and commitment of our public service shine through in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

I understand that sustainable and inclusive cities don’t just happen, they are built by people and governments with a vision for a better future. I hope I’ll have the privilege of continuing to work for our community as part of a Labor Government and as a genuine, strong and progressive voice for the heart of Canberra.

Alix O'HARA (Australian Climate Change Justice Party)

Alix O'HARA

I am a self-made internationally award winning for-purpose young female entrepreneur, and recognised business leader, with a rough background.  I founded my health research integrated enterprise (Mashblox) in Canberra as a social impact enterprise focussing on self-feeding solutions for toddlers and their long term health benefits including food preferences. These are already recognised by UK’s National Health Service and Health Canada.

I am currently considering an offered PhD placement for parallel work in infant obesity intervention, while improving mealtime experience for parent and child.  I have put that aside for this campaign to raise a number of social, environmental and economic imperatives at this ACT Election. As a self-starter, I am particularly interested in sharing our views and advocating for the creation of new sustainability enterprises in the ACT.  With experience in the business incubation hubs in the ACT and the challenges of building an internationally scalable business from Canberra I see pathways and infrastructure that must be built by the ACT Government and local business to allow a renaissance of innovation and commercialisation of existing Canberra entrepreneurial talent, and their global offering. Retaining this initiative benefits the community and job creation as much as the individual.

"Our government was built to "govern" systems designed for times gone by, and makes no attempt to lead for where our society is heading. They're barely keeping up for where we are, and apparently think that that is okay.

“Climate change in particular presents an unprecedented impending threat not just to our way of life, but ultimately to the longevity of our species, that the parties in power have made fewer efforts to address than they have to pretending it's not a problem.

“Other matters are ignored entirely, and incremental progress will not be enough to fix them.

“We actually need things to change, now if not yesterday, and we need people with the creativity and greater driving motivation than their image, status, and re-election. We need to break the party duopoly and put people in power that represent the long term interests of us all. That starts with the question of what needs to be improved, then working out how. This motivated problem solving and development of new pathways has been my specialty as an entrepreneur.

The ACT Government needs leaders. The team of Candidates comprising the Australian Climate Change Justice Party are a diverse group of individual representative of the Canberran community with a common aspiration of making Canberra a climate adapted and just city. I am eager to be given the opportunity to be part of the leadership solution for the required reform.  I encourage the electorate to take a look at our detailed and progressive policy platform at www.climatechangejustice.com.au that has brought together the ready to implement pathways for the evolution of Canberra to confront the challenges of this century and prosper.”
