School and community visits
Activities
Activities may include:
- Visits to the Legislative Assembly.
- Classroom sessions on the Hare-Clark electoral process, including mock elections or referendums.
- Assistance with SRC or other school elections.
- Provision of resources and advice.
- Presentations to community groups on topics relevant to the electoral system.
School responsibilities
Elections ACT staff have extensive knowledge and experience with the Hare-Clark electoral process, which they bring to the classroom. The best results occur when sessions align with relevant topics being covered by the teacher. For example, in a civics context, after a teacher covers parliament, Elections ACT staff can then explain representation and the election process, providing handouts to students.
Staff may request the use of facilities like video or projector screens. It's important that teaching staff stay during presentations. They may need to assist, especially during activities like mock elections or referendums. These details and the time required will be discussed and agreed upon when organising a visit.
How to book a visit
Teachers or community groups interested in a visit or other assistance should contact Elections ACT to discuss their needs and make a booking. During busy times, such as the weeks leading up to an ACT Legislative Assembly election, staff might not be able to visit a school but can still offer advice and resources. It's recommended to arrange visits and other assistance with as much notice as possible to meet all requirements.
