Deregistration of Independents for Canberra
The political party, Independents for Canberra, has been removed from the ACT’s register of political parties, ACT Electoral Commissioner, Mr Damian Cantwell AM CSC, announced today, 10 July 2025.
‘Independents for Canberra originally applied to register as a political party in the ACT on 30 January 2024, prior to the 2024 ACT Legislative Assembly election. The party was officially registered on 8 March 2024. The registration has been cancelled at the request of the party.’ Mr Cantwell said.
‘Mr Thomas Emerson MLA was elected as a party candidate for Independents for Canberra at the 2024 ACT Legislative Assembly election, however, Mr Emerson resigned from the party on 5 February 2025 to sit in the Assembly as a non-party MLA.’ Mr Cantwell said.
