Three new political parties apply for registration

The ACT Electoral Commission has received applications from three groups wishing to be registered as political parties for the October 20 Legislative Assembly election.

The Electoral Commissioner, Phil Green, will tomorrow place advertisements giving notice of the following applications:

  • Name of proposed party: Canberra First Party
  • Proposed registered officer: Hank Spier, 92 Jervois Street, Deakin
  • Name of proposed party: Gungahlin Equality Party
  • Proposed registered officer: John Simsons, 51 McCabe Crescent, Holt
  • Name of proposed party: Nurses Good Government Party
  • Proposed registered officer: Janice Maree Flaherty, 17 Strzelecki Place, Narrabundah.

Anyone wishing to object to the registration of these groups as parties for the coming election must lodge an objection with the Electoral Commissioner by 22 August 2001.

Copies of the applications and the constitutions of the parties are available for public inspection at the office of the Commissioner between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm on business days. Objections will be made available to the relevant proposed registered officer for comment.

The Electoral Commission has in recent weeks de-registered the following parties which participated in the 1998 election. All three parties requested that their party registration be cancelled.

  • The Christian Democratic Party (Fred Nile Group)
  • The Progressive Labour Party
  • The Shooters Party (ACT)

If you wish to object to the registration of any of these parties, you are invited to lodge a written notice of objection with the Electoral Commissioner.

The notice should:

  • set out the grounds of the objection;
  • set out the name and address of the objector; and
  • be signed by the objector.
