ACT Electoral Commission Special Report on the Electoral Act available

The ACT Electoral Commission has prepared a special report to the ACT Legislative Assembly on proposed changes to the Electoral Act, the ACT Electoral Commissioner, Phillip Green said today.

The ACT Electoral Commission’s report Proposed changes to the Electoral Act 1992: Response to the Voting Matters report and further campaign finance reform issues: 2014 was tabled in the ACT Legislative Assembly on 23 September 2014.

“The report contains a response to the Voting Matters report released earlier this year by the Legislative Assembly Select Committee on Amendments to the Electoral Act 1992. In addition, the report discusses further issues related to the operation of the ACT’s campaign finance reforms following major changes to disclosure laws that commenced on 1 July 2012. The report makes 20 recommendations for consideration by the Assembly,” Mr Green said.

“Under new arrangements that commenced on 1 July 2014 that established the Electoral Commission members as officers of the Legislative Assembly, this special report was presented to the Speaker of the Assembly for tabling. The Attorney General is required to provide a written response to the report to the Assembly within 3 months after the day the report was tabled,” Mr Green said.

The next ACT Legislative Assembly election is due to be held on 15 October 2016.
