“The ACT Legislative Assembly election starts officially this Friday, 12 September,” ACT Electoral Commissioner, Phil Green, said today.

“That day marks the beginning of the pre-election period, and the opening of the period for candidates to nominate for the 2008 election for the ACT Legislative Assembly,” he said.

Polling day is Saturday 18 October 2008.

Voting is compulsory for people over 18 who are Australian citizens living in the ACT.

“To vote in this election you must be on the ACT electoral roll by 19 September, the date when rolls close,” Mr Green said.

All people living in the ACT who are entitled to vote must be correctly enrolled.

“People who have not yet informed the Electoral Commission of a change of address, or people who have recently turned 18 and have not yet enrolled, should do so as soon as possible,” Mr Green said.
