New political party registered for 2008 ACT election - 9 parties registered for the election

A new political party for the 18 October 2008 ACT Legislative Assembly election has been registered”, the ACT Electoral Commissioner, Phil Green, said today.

“The Richard Mulcahy Canberra Party has been entered on the register of political parties in the ACT with effect from today, 18 July 2008,” Mr Green said.

“Registered political parties are able to list their party name on ballot papers and receive public funding of election expenses,” Mr Green said. 

It is now too late for any political parties not yet registered for the October ACT election to apply.  The deadline to submit an application for official registration for the 2008 election was 30 June 2008.

“There are nine parties registered for the 18 October 2008 election”, Mr Green said.

The parties as they appear in the register today are:

Note:  The Community Alliance Party (ACT) has applied to change its registered abbreviation from CAP to Community Alliance.  The period for objection to the application closes on 22 July 2008.  Pending any objections, the decision on whether or not to approve the change will be made after that date.
