Electorates 2008 election

After the 2004 election, changes were made to the electorate boundaries that had been in place since the 2001 election.

The electorate names of Brindabella, Ginninderra and Molonglo were again retained, as were the number of Members to be elected from each electorate. Five (5) Members of the Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory are still to be elected from each of Brindabella and Ginninderra and seven (7) Members from Molonglo, making the 17 Members in the Assembly.

The only change to the boundaries involved transferring the suburb of Farrer from Molonglo to Brindabella.

Brindabella

For the 2008 ACT Legislative Assembly election, Brindabella will be a five member electorate comprising the district of Tuggeranong (excluding the suburb of Hume), the Woden Valley suburbs of Chifley, Pearce, Torrens and Farrer and the southern remainder of the ACT.

The name "Brindabella" is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "two kangaroo rats". For generations of Canberrans, Brindabella is the name associated with the mountain range which dominates the southern horizon of Canberra City.

Ginninderra

For the 2008 ACT Legislative Assembly election, Ginninderra will be a five member electorate comprising the districts of Belconnen and Hall (including the entire Village of Hall) and the Gungahlin suburb of Nicholls.

The name "Ginninderra" is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "sparkling like the stars". It is the name given to the creek that flows through the middle of Belconnen, which was dammed to form Lake Ginninderra, the lake on which the Belconnen Town Centre is sited.

Molonglo

For the 2008 ACT Legislative Assembly election, Molonglo will be a seven member electorate comprising the districts of Gungahlin (excluding the suburb of Nicholls), Canberra Central, Weston Creek, Woden Valley (excluding the suburbs of Chifley, Pearce, Torrens and Farrer), Jerrabomberra (including the entire suburb of Hume), Kowen, Majura, and Stromlo.

The name "Molonglo" is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "like the sound of thunder". It is the name of the river that flows through the central electorate, which was dammed to form Lake Burley Griffin, one of the focal points of Canberra and of the central electorate.
